Division Learning

Division is introduced as a concept around Grade 2.

Unlike addition and subtracting, multiplication and division are concepts that do not come naturally to many children. Quite a lot of time may need to be dedicated in developing children's understanding of what division is and how it works. Time spent doing this is time well spent, so that children become more confident with their understanding of division before they continue their journey into learning division facts.

Solving division problems that can be acted out and physically shared out is also a very good way to understand division and what it is all about.

The division learning in 2nd Grade underpins future learning of the division facts, and the standard long division algorithm learnt in future grades.

During 2nd grade, children should be learning the following division skills:

  • understand what division is and how it works;
  • solve simple division problems with a context.

Division Practice Area

Here is our free division practice area.

If you want to practice your division facts, or take a timed division test, then this is the place for you.

In this area, we cover the following division facts:

  • division facts from 4x4, up to 10x10;
  • division facts linked to individual tables facts.

Understanding Division Sheets

Using Division as Sharing and Grouping

The following webpages involve use sharing and grouping as models to help to develop an understanding of what division is.

It is essential that children actually act out the division problems by physically sharing or grouping the objects physically before they use pencil and paper methods.

Using the sheets in this section will help your child to:

  • understand division in terms of equal sharing;
  • understand division in terms of grouping.

All the sheets in this section will help your child to develop their understanding of division.

  • Understanding Division as Sharing
  • Understanding Division as Grouping

Using Division as the inverse of Multiplication

The following webpage involve understanding division as the inverse or opposite of multiplication.

The sheets in this section are a little more challenging than the sections above because children need to have a good understanding of multiplication before they tackle this.

The sheets use arrays to make the link between multiplication and division so that children can see that each multiplication fact is linked to a division fact and vice versa.

Using the sheets in this section will help your child to:

  • understand division in terms of arrays;
  • convert a multiplication fact to a division fact.

All the sheets in this section will help your child to develop his or her division understanding.

  • Understanding Division as the inverse of Multiplication

Division Problems

This section involves using division facts and knowledge to solve simple division problems.

Solving problems will often help cement children's understanding as they have to apply the knowledge they have learnt.

Giving children simple division problems which they can draw out or work practically will help to give children confidence and develop their understanding of how division works.

Using these sheets will help your child to:

  • apply their division knowledge to solving simple division problems;
  • practice their division facts.

Using these division worksheets will help to develop your child's division and problem solving skills.

  • Division Problems

Division Games

Playing games is a great way to develop division knowledge and skills in an informal and fun way.

The games in this section have been designed to help children understand division in terms of models and grouping objects.

Many of the games will also help children to develop their strategic thinking skills.

Using these games will help your child to:

  • begin to learn their division facts to 5x5;
  • understand division in a visual model;
  • develop strategic thinking skills.

These sheets will help to develop your child's division skills in a fun and enjoyable way.
